Our Approach to PHSE & RSHE
PSHE
At the Marist, our PSHE curriculum aims to prepare each child for their life in the wider world, now and in the future. We look to develop the child as a whole person, supporting them in developing the knowledge, skills and values they need to make informed decisions, overcome challenges and keep themselves safe.
PSHE is taught in weekly sessions, following the Jigsaw scheme of work. Where appropriate, teachers may adapt lessons to best meet the needs of their children. During the year, children will focus on the six areas of Being Me, Celebrating Differences, Dreams and Goals, Relationships and Healthy Me. Each year group will focus on a different aspect of the topic, so that children gain a deeper understanding as they progress through the school.
At The Marist, we also take part in a number of themed weeks and events during the year, that relate to different aspect of the PSHE curriculum. These include Anti-bullying week, World Mental Health Week and Internet Safety Day. In addition, we recognise the importance of children’s mental health. Within our school, we use worry boxes, Zones of Regulation and our ELSA team as part of an effort to create an environment which supports children’s wellbeing and mental health.
RSHE
A Journey in Love is a resource recommended for Catholic schools for Relationship and Sex Education and has been written as a progressive scheme of work that supports the Religious Education, PSHE and Science curricula taught within the school. Central to this resource is the idea of being made in the image and likeness of God. For children to be at ease with themselves, they need to deepen their self-knowledge. An aspect of the mystery of love is treated in each year group; children and young people are encouraged to marvel at the wonder and beauty of God's creative love. This is reflected in each stage of a person's growth in primary years through a series of suggested, progressive and developmental tasks, activities and reflections that focus on social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development. The topic covered include:
- Early Years- The wonder of being unique and special
- Year 1- We meet God's love in our family
- Year 2- We meet God's love in the community
- Year 3- How we live in love
- Year 4- God loves us in our differences
- Year 5- God loves us in our changing and developing
- Year 6- The wonder of God's love in creating new life
As with all aspects of learning, children are naturally curious, and many will have questions related to their lessons. Opportunities to discuss questions form part of the lessons and again these are treated with care and understanding.
