Geography: Our Intent, Approach and Implementation
At The Marist, our Geography curriculum is designed to foster a lifelong curiosity about the world and its people. It supports children in becoming confident, resilient, articulate, and responsible members of our inclusive Catholic community. Through a carefully sequenced and enquiry-led approach, pupils develop a secure understanding of geographical concepts, places, and processes, both locally and globally.
Learning begins by exploring what pupils already know, using reflective tools such as hot and cold question sheets and overarching big questions to frame each topic. Pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through the use of knowledge organisers, which provide key vocabulary and background information to support independent enquiry. They engage in research tasks, both in class and at home and present their findings through class presentations, class worships and themed events such as International Week.
Geography at The Marist is enriched by meaningful experiences beyond the classroom. Pupils benefit from visits to local geographical sites and interactions with visiting experts, which help to contextualise their learning. Fieldwork in the local area—including studies of West Byfleet, Wisley Gardens, and the Wey Navigation—enables pupils to observe and analyse real-world geographical features and human impact.
Children are guided to understand their role in the wider world, exploring how they influence and are influenced by their environment. They learn how geographical changes affect communities and ecosystems over time and are encouraged to think critically about current and historical issues. Through discussion and debate, pupils develop the ability to question, explain and synthesise ideas, deepening their understanding of the dynamic and interconnected nature of our planet.
